Painted Floor Cloth

I love our screened porch but it needed a pop of color and I could never find an outdoor rug that I liked so I thought I would try making one.
Have you ever heard of painting a floor cloth using the backside of vinyl flooring? It’s so much easier than the old method of using canvas, because there's no hemming required.

I purchased a 10x12 piece from my local home improvement store and trimmed it to  the size I needed using regular scissors.
The first thing I did was prime it with several coats of water based primer

I also used left over house paint and acrylic craft paint that I already had. I knew I wanted a random stripe because I didn’t want to worry too much about measuring the stripes, I just made it up as I went.
I used Frog tape for the taping the stripes, it works really well for this type of project because it doesn’t allow the paint to bleed through.
Once all the paint was dry, I just coated the entire thing with 3 coats of fast drying water based floor poly.

  3. Awesome Idea!!! Thanks for sharing!

  4. Love it! Quick question tho, how do you keep it so flat? Doesn't it want to naturally curl?

  5. That is awesome, and so clever! It looks dramatic and fabulous. I'd love it if you shared this at my Saturday Splendour Party which is still open. Meg :)

  6. You have just solved one of my major decorating dilemmas!!!! I also could not find an area rug in the perfect colors, now I can just make my own, you have no idea how happy this post has made me - THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!!!!

  12. This is fantastic--please tell me too how to keep it flat and if you need to secure it to the floor somehow. What a great idea!

  13. Love the colors, Trixie! Great project!!

  14. I have dogs and my rugs get dirty really fast so I'm thinking of just painting them with poly. They are cotton. I've done canvas floor cloths but I'm not sure how this will come out. Anybody ever tried it?

  15. Beautiful! love the colors....I sure hope that darn poly doesn't turn it yellow for you :)
    Hugs from Iowa,

  16. Okay. Holy coincidence. I JUST discovered the linoleum floor cloth about an hour ago while looking for a solution to cover my ceramic tile in the kitchen (loathe the stuff) and then I read your post. Love the color and the stripes. Is it shifty or does it stay put? I'll be sliding chairs around on it (and I'm sure my Grey will go cruising across it on his Lightening McQueen)!

  17. LOVE always! You do amazing work!

  18. Again, amazing. You were featured this week. Come grab a button :)

  19. Wow, just seeing this post on the floor cloth. Gorgeous! How do you make sure it doesn't curl up? Is is double-sided taped to the floor? Very curious about this, would love one for my patio, but am concerned about the curling ...

Also, would you advise as to the paint colors you used? Your color choices are gorgeous -- my absolute favorites! Would love to know what brand/colors you decided on.

    Best to you!

  20. Love this idea and the colors you used! My favorites! :D I too want to know if this curls up? I guess I could weigh down the corners with furniture... Rugs are supposed to sit under furntiure anyway, right? :D I would love to have rug over the hardwood in my living room. Will I slip and slide? How does it hold up to four legged friends?

Tell me more, tell me more!
    Thanks for sharing!

  21. How does it hold up with rain coming onto the porch?
