Photo Shoot and Fabulous Giveaway

Tuesday was for the photo shoot for COTTAGE STYLE Magazine.

Meet stylist Lynn Nesmith and photographer Jean Allsopp, two talented, sweet and fun women.

They shot several rooms in our house and styled it so cute, I can’t wait to see it in the magazine, it was so much fun.

The talented pair also has a new book out, 30A Style.

Their book highlights gorgeous beach homes in the historic communities and new towns along the scenic highway 30A,

located in northwest Florida in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dream Baths

I hope everyone had a great holiday. It’s been awhile since I’ve blogged, but I took a short break to focus on my three ETSY stores.

Most of you know that we have a 1970’s ranch home and it’s pretty much done as far as renovations and decorating goes, except the main bathroom.

This is the hall/main bathroom that guests and myself use and let me tell you it isn't pretty, quite ugly in fact.

I’ll show the before pictures once we start on the renovation, which I hope will start within the next few months, but I may get vetoed on the starting time.

It’s a typical small bath, so I’m limited on size but that doesn’t mean it can’t be pretty, right?

If I had an unlimited budget meaning I just won the lottery, here are some great baths I would love to have.

Can you tell I love a freestanding tub?

Here are a few choices for my bath.

I love this tub, it’s in my price range and it’s a jetted tub!

who would think a toilet could be cute, but this I think is, I love the molding around the base.

I really want a marble tile floor but I may opt for ceramic if the price isn’t right.

I’m thinking beadboard for the walls like I did in the dining room and we have a vintage sideboard that my brother gave us, that we will be converting into a sink vanity.

I can’t wait to take a soak in that tub!

Vintage Fringe Tree

Most of you know that I love to repurpose things so I came up with another project using my green vintage crushed velvet bedspread.

The vintage spread was found at a garage sale for 2.00, but this time I’m using the fringe.

I decoupaged an artist canvas with book pages, aged it a little and then glued on the fringe in the shape of a christmas tree.

Then I just added vintage buttons, beads and a vintage brooch for the tree topper.

You could really do this project using any kind of fringe or even ruffled strips of fabric.

I think I’ll try strips of fabric next.

I've decorated our living room and dining room for Christmas in turquoise and greens, along with some vintage and handmade items.

It’s easy to change your every day framed art with custom holiday prints.

Ornaments tied with ribbon and attached to the shutters, just adds a little color.

Vintage brooch on old wool sweater turned into a pillow.

Silk hydrangeas tucked into the tree to add a little cream color, it almost looks like popcorn, doesn’t it?

The tree was made from branches from a dead dogwood tree we cut down.

I added moss rocks to the base and decorated it with some homemade and store bought ornaments. I love the way it turned out and you can’t beat free.

Soda Chalkboard

Finally, I’m done with the chalkboard.

I made it out of a metal side panel from a vintage soda cooler and a piece of MDF cut to size painted with chalkboard paint.

The custom chalk holder I made out of a wood cup/finial found at the craft store, I just painted it and added tiny magnets.

I also made bottle cap magnets.

I love the red picking through the aqua color.

Vintage style miniature wreath ornaments

I found a really cool vintage funky green crushed velvet bedspread for 2.00, it has a small spot on the center but I didn’t care because I knew I was going to use it for fabric.

I’ve made several throw pillows and now the little wreath ornaments.

I cut a small slits a little wider than 1/4 inch on the end of the fabric, then tore the fabric into strips.

The wreath shape was cut out of cardboard, a fast trick for cutting out the inside is to cut a slit and then cut the inside, when your done, use clear tape to seal back the edges. It so much faster this way.

Just wrap a strip around the cardboard wreath and secure with hot glue. Then add any embellishments you like.

They make great tree ornaments, magnets or gift package embellishments.

Fun, cheap and easy to do.

Turquoise pallet shelf

We’ve all been seeing so many things made with pallets lately and I love the fact that they’re free and that they can be saved from ending up in the landfill.

Just recently I found a print shop not far from my house that has a ton of free pallets, in all shapes and sizes.

I thought I would first try a pallet shelf, and because I wanted to add a little color to mine, I just thinned down acrylic craft paint with water. The more water you use, the more transparent the color will be, just like whitewashing wood only with a color. When it was good and dry I sanded down any rough areas which gave it a worn rustic look.

I love mine in turquoise, but I think these would look great any any color.

Repurposed Vintage Doilies and Frames

Ever wonder what to do with vintage crochet doilies and table runners?

I love them but don’t use them in my décor and wanted to come up with something to showcase their beauty.

Vintage wood frames and vintage doilies make a lovely combination.

Here’s what I came up with.
Tip: you don't need to use a square doily for a square frame, most of the doilies I used were round. I also think they look better when the center of the doily is off center in the frame, it also makes it easier to attach to the frame.

Staple and stretch the lace over the backside of the frame, make sure you stretch it rather taught, the tighter it is the better it will look.

I also used an old wood window frame, if you don’t have enough room on the middle cross bars to staple, you can also use a fast setting epoxy to adhere the lace to the frame.

When you’re done stapling or gluing, trim the excess doily with scissors.

It was a fast, easy project, I hope you try it.

chalk paint frame

I’m probably the last crafter on earth that hasn’t tried chalk paint, what can I say I’m always a little behind on things. Because my budget is tight, I wanted to try and make my own and

I found a great tutorial at No Minimalist here blog.

I already had plaster of paris so that’s what I used. It was so easy, I can’t wait to do a larger project with this homemade paint.

the gold frame was nice enough on it’s own, I’m just not a fan of gold frames.

I love the soft plaster like finish it has, and it looks great with one of my new chalkboard prints.

Burlap Owl with pattern

I wanted to share these little cuties again that I made a few years ago for my sister-in law. They’re so fun and easy to make.

For the body glue burlap, fabric or paper on poster board or sturdy cardboard, once dry cut the body out.

For the face and wings you can use vintage book pages, scrapbook paper or even fabric.

For the eyes I used scrapbook paper cut from a 1/2 inch circle punch then glued wood buttons on top.

I’ve included the pattern so you can make them too!

Just right click the pattern and print!

Update a bookcase or Shelves

This is a great trick if you want to change out the back of a shelf or bookcase, just add fabric or wallpaper to change the look.

I covered the blue paint in my kitchen for the holiday by cutting foam core board to size and wrapping burlap around the foam core.

I used tape to hold the fabric in place so I can easily change it when I want a new look.

I added tarnished silver, book page prints and sprinkled in a little Halloween décor.

Halloween nook

I change out my blue bench cushion and pillows for neutral linen and cream colored ones.

I also added some inexpensive halloween décor like the black crows cutouts that are made out of cardstock.

Added vintage silver and amber colored bowls.

Changed my mirror out for this oval one, which is actually a mirror too, covered it with repositionable chalkboard paper, so if I want it to be a mirror again I just peel off the paper.

Yummy chocolate cupcakes

Changed the blue chair to a natural wood one.

And changed the prints on the side cabinets to chandelier scones.

I love how it turned out and love the rich fall colors.

Halloween Aged Anatomy Chart

This is a very inexpensive Halloween craft project.

I took some anatomy images and created a large 18 x22 image which I took to my local print shop to have printed. Since this is a black and white image the cost is minimal, I paid under 3.50 for this size.

If needed trim the paper first, then wad the paper into a ball to crinkle it, then unroll and flatten slightly.

To age it, brush on leftover coffee or tea, the creases will soak up more color providing an aged textured look. I suggest building up layers of color until you are happy with the effect. While the paper is wet it is easy to tear, so just wait for it to dry of use a hair dryer to speed up drying time.

For the top and bottom piece use leftover trim or even dowel rods, paint or stain them to the desired color. Attaching the bottom trim will add weight to the paper helping it hang better.

Just glue the trim to the paper and add twine or leather cord to hang, it’s that easy.

Cinnamon Stick Mirror

I made the cinnamon stick mirror using a wood wreath form and whole cinnamon sticks found at my local craft store.

I love the rusty orange color of the cinnamon sticks and it smells good too.

World Globe Turned Pumpkin

I love the look of vintage folk art pumpkins….

meet Piper the Pumpkin,

he started life out as a plain old vintage world globe.

I love finding vintage globes but sometimes they’re damaged and just don’t look good. The orig. base on this globe was all messed up, so when I found it really really cheap at a garage sale, I snapped it up. I originally cut the top off thinking maybe to use it as a shade for a lamp, but they project never happened.

I painted him a rusty orange color

and then followed the lines of the globe with black paint to show detail on the pumpkin.

Having the top cut off worked to my advantage because Piper not only looks cute, he can hold candy too.

I made his hat out of scrapbook and crepe paper,the base is a wood plaque from the craft store.

He’s gonna be so cute in my kitchen decorated for Halloween.

Great Find and Inspiration

Isn't this couch neat? I found it yesterday at an estate sale for 100.00. Each side is 8 feet long and the entire sofa was covered in plastic slipcovers, over time it actually discolored the fabric, I can't wait to have it reupholstered.

While I love tufting, I think I will go for a more clean look and omit it here. I'm still deciding on staying a nice neutral color or a linen in a lovely shade of aqua.

I love these two examples of simple clean lines.

Chalkboard or Mirror?

I found this really cool metal piece at a garage sale, actually I found two of them. I believe they were originally the sides of an old soda machine, you know the old vintage ones that you slide back the top glass door and reach into and grab an ice cold bottled soda.

I painted the red a lovely aqua color and when I wax it the color is going to pop.

I need your help deciding on turning into a mirror or a chalkboard, what would you do?

Who says you need a paintbrush

I love making signs for my house and I made this MARKET sign for the kitchen. It was once a sign with a silly saying on it that I found at a garage sale, and I knew when I bought it I would repaint it.

I painted the inside white and the border a teal-ish color. Because the original sign was stained I took advantage of that and used a chip brush giving it a weathered painted look and allowing the original color to show thru.

Now onto the the lettering and hand, I just didn’t have the time to sit there and paint it, so why not a permanent black marker? I found the font and hand image I wanted, enlarged it to the size I needed and used carbon paper to trace onto the sign frame. I found the pointing hand image at Graphics Fairy, she has the best images.

Because the wood was a little textured the letters aren’t completely filled in which gives it a worn aged look. It was meant to be in that kitchen and I just love it hanging above the shelves.

So next time you have a project that is a little labor intensive, why not use a marker instead of a paint brush.

Good news! Every since I starting blogging and sharing pictures of my home I would get emails asking me where on earth did I get my dining room curtain fabric from? Of course I purchased it several years ago and had no idea of the name. I originally purchased from Fabric Guru, it was a discontinued pattern and all I knew was I loved it. I received another email last week and it finally hit me to search back 3 years of emails hoping to find the confirmation order email and hoping it would have the pattern name and company, yeah!!!! It did!

Here it is made into pillows, isn’t it pretty!

I wasn't crazy about the curly scrolls on the top so I cut them off and grinded down the welds with a table grinder.

The frame just needed a fresh coat of cream spray paint.

For the back and seat fabric, I used my black and cream chevron and destination fabric, both are from my new line of fabrics.

I call it the DESTINATION CHAIR.

Think before you leap

A few days ago I left blogger and switched over to Wordpress, not the smartest thing I’ve done because I found it very hard compared to blogger. Don’t get me wrong Wordpress is great but if you are technically challenged like me, it’s hard!!! So unless you have a blog desiger or have hours and hours to waste not to mention want to cry and pull your hair out, think before you do it. I hope all is working well now.

Furniture+Decoupage+Maps

Don't you just love decorating with maps? I found a in need of serious love buffet/sideboard at a garage sale, the veneer was all messed up but that didn't matter to me and especially not for the cheap price tag.

I removed all the veneer to expose the solid wood underneath, most of it just popped off, but I had to work on the top a little.

I painted it using my old paint finish technique and matched one of the blues that was in the map I was using on the front drawers.

I even lined the drawers with the index pages from the back of the atlas.

Next time you see a piece that's in need of love, think decoupage!

Old paint finish technique

I wanted to show you how to achieve a layered old paint effect using an ordinary chip brush that you can purchase at any craft or hardware store.

This is my cute little 16 year old kitty, Sammy, he wanted everyone to see how cute he was, so he posed for this picture.

My turquoise chair in my kitchen started off as a $1.00 garage sale find. The seat had split, so we just glued and clamped it, now it's as good as new.

Now onto the paint job.

I generally don't sand before I paint, I just make sure it's clean using glass cleaner and rag. Most of you know that I paint my furniture using regular acrylic craft paint. Try mixing up your own colors for that special custom color and believe it or not those little 2oz bottles go along way.

Chip Brush

Now forget all those rules about regular painting, it's ok, if you have a drip, it's ok if you have missed spots, it's even ok to brush over it before it's dry, this will give texture and make it look like something that's old and been around for years.

For this chair I only used one color, but layered the coats, 3 coats total. The first coat, you can see how it has a dry brush effect and there are many missed areas.

Because the chip brush has uneven bristles, it's easy to give that uneven appearance.

The second coast was done just like the first but you can see how the blue is looking a little more uniform, but still patchy.

The third coat or even more coats if you want, will finish off the weathered old look. I'm usually so impatient that I get out my hair dryer and dry the paint as I go, remember you can't mess this kind of paint job up, any mess up only add texture and depth.

Sometimes I will sand or scrape to distress further, but this chair had enough character that I didn't think it was needed.

To protect the finish I always apply a wax finish, like minwax furniture wax, you will need to apply at least 2 coats, but I think 3 give the best finish. Just follow the directions on the can.

So give it a try, you'll be amazed how easy it is.

Cabinet Paint, Knobs and Countertops

We did the math and the kitchen remodel came in under $6,000 including appliances. We saved a ton of money by doing the work ourselves.

I really wanted white cabinets and because custom cabinets wouldn’t be in our budget we chose stock unfinished oak cabinets from Lowes and painted them ourselves. The truth is I painted them, I don’t know what it is about painting but it has to be perfect or it will drive me crazy, unless it’s a distressed painted piece then I can have fun and let my perfectionist side go out the window.

I don’t think I have ever painted so much in my life, 3 coats of primer, lots of sanding and 3 finish coats of paint. I used a fabulous paint from Decoart, Americana Satin Enamel, it was a dream to paint with and goes on so smooth. I wanted the kitchen to look unique and have some custom touches so we added special features like the range hood, window seat and the columns flanking the stove and sink. The columns are stair balusters cut in half, you can actually buy them that way, and the ball feet are wood curtain rod finials attached to the baluster.

I’ve always wanted carrara marble countertops, but it was not possible for our budget, so my next choice was dark butcher block. The price range on wood countertops range drastically and I wanted a good price so we purchased ours from IKEA , $169.00 for an 8ft length in oak , a great price ! I custom mixed my stain myself using 3 different colors. I didn’t want it too red, too golden or too black and made sure to test it out on a scrap piece of wood before I started. I applied several coats until I got the depth of color I was looking for. To protect the finish we applied several coats of tung oil.

For the cabinet hardware, I really wanted something a little different, so I took vintage pulls off of a dresser I had and the small round knobs came from IKEA, they’re only a few dollars a package and at least six come in a package. All I did was sand them a little, prime and paint with an oil rubbed bronze spray paint.

My next project is my bathroom remodel, which I’ve been told won’t be happening anytime soon, because my sweetie needs a break from remodeling. I’m thinking a month break, but he’s probably thinking a year break .

Finally, the kitchen is done!

It still amazes me when I look at pictures of the old Kitchen to see how far we've come. I'm so proud that we did it all ourselves minus the electrical and plumbing, we left that to the professionals. The kitchen is a small galley with 3 different doorways leading into it. We gutted it and replaced everything except the drywall.

I originally was going to paint the walls the lovely blue that we have in our dining room but once I primed all the walls white I loved how bright and cheery it looked.I did tie in the blue paint behind the lower shelf on the sink side, I think it added just a little color that I was looking for.

this was such an unused space, so we added pantry cabinets to flank the window and built a window bench. This little nook was meant to be there and it works great in this kitchen, not to mention all the storage the pantry cabinets hold.

Talk about no counter space, I hated the fridge being on the right side, it blocked the view of the kitchen when you entered the room and stuck out way to far. I had several wishes for the new kitchen and one of them was a counter depth fridge, I love counter depth fridges especially in a small kitchen likes ours. The other wish was a slide-in stove, I love them because visually they don't crowd the backsplash area, just clean lines with no distraction. Well after searching and waiting for a sale I got both my wishes. We moved the fridge where the built-in oven used to be. I can't tell you how much it opened up the kitchen.

We built a cabinet for the fridge so it would have a built in look in plus it added more storage and display for above.

I love my new kitchen and wouldn't change a thing.

Lamp Turned Table

Most of you know by now that I love to turn ordinary things into something that they're not. I needed a small oval shaped table for my new breakfast nook and just couldn't find one anywhere. So why not make one, right? I purchased a used oak coffee table a few years ago for 20.00, I didn't like the table so much but I loved the top, it had a great shape to it. (sorry didn't take a before picture of that)

I removed the top, and saved it for who knows what down the road. Well who knows what turned into this perfect sized table for the new kitchen. Only one problem left what was I going to do for the base? Then it hit me, my sister-in law found these neat wood lamps for $2.50 each. I asked her if I could have one because I had a project in mind. The base was solid wood so it was pretty easy to do and with the help of my sweetie we now have a fabulous little table.

The ball feet are wood round balls from the craft store.

I painted it with several colors and highly distressed it to make it look old, then finished it with a low sheen wax to protect it.

I love my my table and we can easily fit 3 around it for dinner, maybe even 4!

Keep Calm and Carry On+Union Jack

I must say I'm in love with the Union Jack Flag, but I guess it's hard not to love it, it has such great graphic lines.

I guess part of me loves it because I lived in England for awhile when I was twenty, it's a gorgeous County, and I would love to visit again someday.

I wanted to share my new print "Keep Calm and Carry On" with you.

Of course mine is turquoise! I printed it on vintage camel colored typewriter paper. I already had the vintage frame, I love how it looks with the oval mat.

There are six different colors available.

The print is 8 X 10 on 8.5 x 13 inch paper. (frame not included)

Hanging Flower Basket Light

I love the look of industrial lighting but don't generally love the price tag. I found a neat one at a local store I love, but couldn't afford it.

So I thought I would make one for my new kitchen.

I found an inexpensive metal flower basket for under 10.00 and a light kit from Lowes for under 20.00.

The light kit was a darker brown tone and the basket was black, I knew I wanted it to look like rusted metal, so I painted both of them using craft paint in a rust tone. Once I got the look I wanted, I let it dry and sprayed on a matte finish varnish.

For under $30.00 I have a unique light, and I just love it over my breakfast table.

Mirror, Mirror over the window

One of my obsessions is mirrors, it's not that I like to look at myself, I just love the lovely lines of the frames and this goes for picture frames too. I have to talk myself out of buying more when I see one I love. I really like the look of a mirror hung in front of a window, and I've found a fabulous one to hang in my new kitchen window.

Speaking of the new kitchen, I'm sure some of you have thought I forgot about it, well I haven't, but I tell you I have never painted so much in my life. Because the cabinets were unfinished oak I needed put 2 coats of primer then sand, then another coat of primer and then two coats of finish paint, then sand and final coat of finish paint. 6 coats is enough to make anyone not ever want to paint again. I still have some sewing to do and other accessory projects to finish, so I promise I'll show it to you soon, but I must say I absolutely love it. Here are some great ideas for hanging a mirror over a window.

Relief from Fibromyalgia

It's hard to believe I haven't posted anything lately and today I want to share with you something other that decorating. I don't usually like to get into medical issues on a decorating blog, but if this post can help just one person I'll be happy. I've dealt with pain for the past 8+ years after being diagnosed with seronegative spondyloarthropathy, this is the name given to a group of chronic or long lasting diseases also called Spondyloarthritis (SpA), (spon-dyl-oh-arthritis) or spondyloarthropathy (spon-d-low-are-throp-ah-thee) and Seronegative" refers to the fact that these diseases are negative for rheumatoid factor, the symptoms are
inflammatory back pain, inflammation where a tendon or ligament attaches to the bone, peripheral arthritis, arthritis of the small joints, heel pain, fatigue and iritis.

None of the medications my rheumatologist had me try helped at all, and each year it was getting more and more difficult to accomplish just the every day tasks of life. Just working a full time office job became a challenge, let alone trying to do a normal activity like shopping. If I was on my feet for more than 30 minutes I was in extreme pain.

Now onto the reason why I'm telling you all this, I was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia also, and after reading the symptoms list, I had every symptom listed, I was the typical fibro patient. Just when I was getting used to the fact that I wouldn't have a normal life or be able to function like a normal person my doctor prescribed CYMBALTA. The FDA just recently approved it for fibromyalgia patients and I can't begin to tell you how much this drug has helped me have a normal life again, the pain is gone, I can bend over and pick things up, I can walk for hours and not hurt, I can do anything I want to do.

Everyday I'm still amazed how my life and body did a 180 pretty much overnight. I starting feeling relief in just a few days and so far I haven't experienced any side effects. I still have issues with my arthritis, but nothing I can't deal with and I know not every medication works for everyone, so if you know someone suffering from Fibromyaligia or you yourself have this condition and feel like there is no hope of feeling good again, I urge you to talk to your doctor about CYMBALTA. Sorry, I realize I sound just like a commercial and I certainly don't want too, but I just had to share my experience with you. Like I said, if this post can only help one person feel good again it was worth sharing.

Custom Built Range Hood

I had to share my new lovely custom built range hood, I just love it! It's only primed right now but hopefully it will be painted tomorrow.

I designed it and my sweetie built it, and I must say he did a great job. We built out of oak plywood, custom made corbels and molding.

I'm happy with the price too, we built the entire piece including the exhaust

insert for under $280.00.

Painted Kitchen Floor

Well it's finally done, well at least the painting of the floor is, I still need to put a several coats of polyurethane on it.

Since our entire house has wood floors and the kitchen has 2 openings that connect to the rest of the wood floors, I didn't want to try and match it, so I decided to paint it.

We laid the oak floor ourselves and while it was easy it was back breaking work. I originally wanted to paint it but after laying the floor my sweetie told me that he wanted to see the grain of the wood, so I white washed it instead.

Once I made up the stencil and got started it, it much easier that I thought it was going to be.

I added the turquoise circles to add a little color without being too overwhelming.

I'm happy with the way it turned out and can't wait for my kitchen to be completed.

Embellished Cabinets

The cabinets we picked out for our Kitchen reno are plain unfinished oak cabinets. I wanted to add a cap and crown molding to add height as well as character, we used oak plywood and stock crown molding to get this look.

This particular cabinet will have a glass front door and the interior will be painted white like the exterior. It's amazing how a little molding can really change the look. I've got tons of painting to do but I think when we get finished it will look great.

And for a much needed break, I'm off to Atlanta this Friday for the County Living Fair, I can't wait! This is their first year in Atlanta and I'm sure it will be fabulous.

Kitchen Redo (sneak peek)

All I can say is maybe one day my kitchen will be completely done! Between both of us working full time, illnesses, back problems, heat, you name it, it's taking us a long time.

We're doing all the work ourselves except the electrical and plumbing, and since I'm a perfectionist everything takes twice as long. But I know it will be all worth it in the end and I'm starting to get excited knowing that one day soon I'll be cooking again in a brand new kitchen.

This is my new gorgeous IKEA farmhouse sink with it's new buddy the handsome Moen oil rubbed bronze faucet.

We also purchased unfinished oak countertops from IKEA, we knew we could save a ton of money finishing and installing the wood countertops ourselves and since my other countertop choice was Carrera marble, talk about expensive, it was a no brainer to pick wood. The dark stain color turned out just like I has envisioned and the backsplash is textured paintable wallpaper, I love it because it reminds me of old pressed tin ceiling tile.

Wish me luck that I'll be cooking this year's Thanksgiving meal in my new kitchen.

Painting Technique for cavity caps

Some of you may remember the mirror I made using cavity caps.

I received many emails asking me about the paint technique I used.

Cavity caps are used between concrete block cells to stop mortar infiltration.

I also heard from many of you that your local Lowe's or hardware store doesn't carry them, or even know what they are.

I guess it's a regional product, for that reason I decided I would sell them in my ETSY store.

For my mirror project I wanted the metal squares to look aged and distressed.

The first thing you need to do is wipe off the front with rubbing alcohol to remove any residue leftover from the manufacturing process. This will allow the paint to adhere better.

My favorite brush to use when doing an aged finish is a chip brush, you can find it at most craft and hardware stores.

Because the chip brush has uneven and natural bristles it doesn't cover like a regular paint brush, and trust me this is a good thing when you are try to achieve an aged distressed finish.

Apply one light coat of you favorite acrylic craft paint, let dry. If you impatient like me you can speed up the drying time using a hair dryer.

Once dry, apply a second coat, in the same or different direction as the first coat, doing this will add more texture and complete coverage is not necessary.

After it's completely dry, rub steel wool over the top in different directions until you achieve the worn look you are looking for.

Then liberally apply a one step crackle to the top and let completely dry.

I like to use DecoArt's crackle finish.

Once the crackle dries, it will have a somewhat shinny appearance (which will disappear once the antique finish is applied).

The crackle is hard to see at this point but will show up nicely once an antiquing wash/glaze is applied.

I like to thin down burnt umber acrylic craft paint to use as my antiquing glaze. You can also used a purchased antiquing glaze for this step.

Just thin the down the burnt umber brown paint with a little with water and apply with a clean chip brush, let set for just a second and blot off the same way you would blot a stain up from the carpet.

Continue to wipe or blot until you achieve the desired look. Multiple layers of the antiquing wash can be applied until you get the look you're after.

I applied several coats of the burnt umber wash for this look.

To protect the finish, apply a spray matte or satin clear coat to the top,(this step is optional).

It's so easy and fun to do this project, and the color options are endless.

Shopping Trip

Well I must say it was fun and I bought a few good things, but one thing in my book that doesn't go together is extreme heat and outdoor shopping.

It was Hot, Hot, Hot and I live in Florida so I'm used to hot weather but nothing like the heat wave they were having.

We started here at Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden Alabama.

My favorite sales were at peoples houses.

Check out the view from their backyard.

I'm a little afraid of heights so I didn't get too close to the edge on this one.

This house was next door to a sale we went to, it was gorgeous.

The scenery was wonderful.

We passed this and I just had to take a picture.

I'm still stumped on the message they were trying to make on this church sign.

We traveled a total of 1300 miles and saw many beautiful things, our last stop was in Jamestown Tennessee, the town where the 127 sale all started.

Here are a few of the things I found. It was a lot of fun and we met some really nice people along the way.

I'm so excited to say that I'm leaving for the World's Longest Yard Sale tomorrow. This is my first year going so I'm not sure what to expect, but from what I've seen on HGTV, I hope it will be a ton of fun. We're starting in Gadsden Alabama and hope to end up around the Tennessee/Kentucky line. Our trip includes myself, my wonderful sweet mother and my lovely sister-in- law.

Bargains here we come!!!!
