I knew for this week's challenge I wanted to paint a piece of furniture. I really have a love for cream colored furniture and I thought this dresser would look great as a buffet in my dining room.
When we bought our house it was pretty plain, white walls and white trim, but it did have good bones. I added the molding, beadboard wallpaper and painted the walls the prettiest blue. In a later post I'll show you my $15.00 craigslist dining table redo.

I found the dresser on craigslist for $20.00. Buying used furniture is a great way to save money and personalize your space. The great thing about paint is if you don't like it you can always paint it again.
I started by removing the 3 wood plaques on the drawers, filled the nail holes with putty and sanded it smooth.
Because I distress and apply a finishing paste wax to all my painted furniture, I never feel the need to prime or pre-sand. I've been painting with regular acrylic craft paint for years and find that it holds up very well.
For the dresser, I chose soft white from the designer series from Deco Art. Designer series, is an all purpose acrylic paint that is specially made for furniture, walls, wood, and canvas, and it comes in an 18oz container at a great price.
I applied one coat and let it dry, but because I am so impatient, I usually end up using a hairdryer to speed up the drying time. I applied a second coat and once dry to the touch I scraped and sanded some of the paint off.
For the drawers I used a laser cut piece of scrapbook paper for my stencil similar to this one below, you can find them in the scrapbook section at your craft store for a dollar or two.

For the texture medium I used modeling paste from "Textures" line from Decoart. You can find this at Michael's Craft Store (on the same isle as the stains and faux finishing kits) or you can purchase it online.
I centered the scrapbook paper over my drawer and applied the modeling paste. I used a scrap piece of cardboard to apply it, you can also use a putty knife, but the cardboard worked great for me. Make sure you have you entire area covered, then slowly lift the paper up in on direction.
Because the laser cut scrapbook paper is made of paper you can only use them a few times before it gets soggy, but I was able to do all 3 drawers with one sheet.
This is how it looks once you remove the paper, it's so easy to use and of course you can you a regular plastic stencil for a project like this. I can't wait to find other items to add texture too. Make sure you let it completely dry prior to painting it. I let the drawers dry overnight and continued on with aging of the rest of the dresser and other drawers. So I hope this will inspire you to try a new project using Decoart's modeling paste.
